December is here!

The school year is flying by! We are three weeks away from the Winter Holiday!

We took a few days last week to talk about Flipping That Bottle! We did an inquiry and experiment on bottle flipping to see what we could discover about the science behind the flips. Do the sizes of the bottle make a difference? Quantity of liquid in the bottle? Students had fun spending a period being able to flip without consequence!

We have begun our second unit in Science with the grade 5s examining Forces while the grade 6s talk about Flight. The grade 5s will be participating in a Scientists in the Schools activity next Friday. This is a unique opportunity as a parent from Castlefrank will be facilitating it for us. In Social Studies, we are developing infographics relating to provinces (grade 5s) and countries which have a relationship with Canada (grade 6s).

A traditional activity which I facilitate and students enjoy is a Multi-cultural Banquet where each student prepares a traditional family dish which they bring to school to share. Our allergy rules are still in place (i.e. no dishes which contains nuts) and the full list of ingredients must be provided. This activity provides a wonderful opportunity for students to share in a common meal with their classmates.

Note that it is the student who must prepare the dish! Parents are encouraged to help their child find and choose the recipe (they will need a copy of it), collect the necessary ingredients, talk about the tradition behind the dish, and finally, photograph the child as he/she cooks (assisting as needed of course). The photos and recipe are important aspects as we will be using them in the new year for a procedural writing (i.e. following a recipe) project.
