December Update

Hello Parents!

It has been a few weeks since I last updated. We are now into December (already!) This update is a little longer than most as I try to catch you up on the goings-on from our class:

The Holidays:
The winter holidays are fast approaching. We are holding a class banquet on Friday, December 18. Students have been asked to come home and talk about a traditional/cultural family dish that they could prepare themselves (with help!) and bring to class to share. Please note that we do have several severe allergies in the class and to be mindful of any dishes which contain nuts. More details on this will come home in an email early next week.

Science:
We are wrapping up our first science unit on The Human Body and Biodiversity. The grade 5s participated in a workshop on Energy, which will lead us into our next unit of study. I am planning on an activity for the grade 6s later in the year.

Social Studies:
We are on-going in our look at the Canadian Government (Grade 5s) and Canada and its' Trading Partners (Grade 6s). We will be continuing until the end of Term 1 (end of January/early February).

Health & Physical Education:
I have fielded several questions about our health unit on Human Development and Sexual Health. The other members of the Health and PE team and myself are working together with our public health nurse on how this topic will be delivered. At the moment, we are looking at early spring for when we will study this unit. A letter will be going home after the holidays with more details.

In the meantime, here is a parent guide from the Ministry of Education to help answer some questions you may have: A Parent's Guide: Human Development and Sexual Health in the Health and Physical Education Curriculum (PDF).

Progress Reports:
Progress reports are coming home next Thursday.

Family Vacations:
Over the winter months, some families choose to take a vacation outside the normal 2-week break. Please note that it is important that the school be made aware of this so that we can mark your child as absent and save unnecessary phone calls. Thank you for your help with this.

As always, I am available to meet or to answer questions. Email is best.
